Skype And Kalmstrom Both Manage Well After Separation

According to VentureBeat, Skype hit a new milestone Monday this week when 35 million people accessed its audio and video conferencing service at the same time. It seems as if Skype manages well without the kalmstrom.com CEO. Peter is glad to see the success of his former employer, and we are happy to have him more active in the team.

Rapid growth after Microsoft take over
When Microsoft bought Skype in June, Microsoft promised to integrate Skype with its existing products. Except for the beta release of Skype for Windows Phone last week we have not seen so much of this yet, but I assume people feel more confident using Skype now when Microsoft is backing the product. The growth has been rapid, because as late as February 23 Skype for the first time had 32 million people signed in simultaneously.

Skype Product Manager
For five years, 2005-2010, Peter Kalmstrom was Product Manager for Skype Toolbars. If you have seen phone numbers on web pages turn into clickable buttons, you have seen an example of the kind of work Peter was responsible for at Skype. The integration of Skype in Outlook was of course also Peter's creation. Actually Peter first developed an add-on he called Outlook Skype, which was a big success for kalmstrom.com Business Solutions in 2004. We had to stop selling it when Skype achieved it and Peter was employed by Skype.

Rapid growth for kalmstrom.com too
After five years Peter felt he wanted to play a more active role in his own business, so he left Skype. At that time kalmstrom.com Business Solutions had only a few employees, but today we have more people involved in both Sweden and India.

The kalmstrom.com Office applications are also used by more people around the globe. We will never be able to brag about as many users as Skype, but that is not our aim. Our primary goal is to keep the solid base of users we have today and continue to give them best possible service. The second goal is to improve the kalmstrom.com products and have more Community Members using them. With Peter at the wheel we will surely reach both goals!

Consumer Preview of Windows 8 released

Microsoft has chosen to call it Consumer Preview instead of Beta, but it was promised to the end of February and it came on the very last, extra day. We recognize the problem – there is always something more you want to improve!

kalmstrom.com compatibility
When the developer preview was released in September the kalmstrom.com Office applications were tested and found to support the new operating system well. Now when we have access to a more developed version of Windows 8 we will of course test again and make our outmost to not only support Windows 8 but also to take advantage of the new features to enhance the kalmstrom.com products.

I have written about Windows 8 in earlier blogs, about the kalmstrom.com technicians' first reactions to the developer release and about the new market the Store integrated in Windows 8 will give us. Therefore I will now mention a few other things rather than the Metro, the Windows Store and the touch screen. Finally I will give you a treat – a photo of a young and rather unknown Bill Gates.

Start fresh
All who once have been forced to reinstall an operating system know that it is a tedious process. With Windows 8 that is history. The new operating system gives the option of going back to a fresh installation of Windows without losing personal files or settings or applications installed from the Windows Store. I am not yet sure how it is with other non-Microsoft programs, that do not come from Windows Store, but it is still a good improvement.

Charms
With Windows 8 Microsoft introduces what they call “charms”. These are small and easily reached icons indented for quick navigation to features you use often, like Search, Share – which will be easier with Windows 8 – Devices – for example to stream video to a TV, or send files to another device – or Settings. With Windows 8 comes Internet Explorer 10, which is said to be the fastest browser of all. I hope it will be better than IE9, which I and many others have found lacking and which I do not find as fast as Google Chrome.

Easy moving between PCs if you use the cloud
It is possible to connect cloud services like Hotmail, SkyDrive, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter to the Microsoft account, and if photos are stored on SkyDrive, Facebook or Flickr you can reach them immediately when you open a PC with Windows 8. This makes it easier to use several PCs and still have all you need at hand.


A long way since Windows 1
Windows has come a long way since the first MS- Windows version, presented in 1983 by a happy Bill Gates in the news clip above. The photo comes from Business Insider, and at that time even the tech section of a business paper had to introduce Microsoft as “a leading producer of microcomputing software”.

Microsoft Sweden Proclaims "Work From Home Day"

Next Wednesday, 8 February, Microsoft Sweden has called for a national “Work from home day”. Their offices will be closed and everyone will be working from home. Microsoft also urges other companies to follow their example and do the same.

Technically possible
Today people can have conferences over the internet and share information in the cloud, so in many cases physical meetings are no longer necessary. Microsoft is doing a lot to extend these possibilities, with products like SharePoint, Office 365 and now also Skype, so the “Work from home day” is not just an altruistic project. Naturally Microsoft wants people to use more of these tools!

Advantages
Apart from the Microsoft business aspect there are however several advantages with working from home. I should know, because I always do it. kalmstrom.com Business Solutions uses the Microsoft platforms mentioned above, as well as some of our own Outlook applications, to make it possible to work with a geographically distributed team of experts.

Working from home gives me several benefits:

• I don’t have to spend time travelling to my work place.
  
  
• I don’t have to pollute the earth while going there.
  
  
• I don’t have to follow strict working hours as long as I am online and reachable during a better part of the day.
  
  
• I can arrange my work space just as I want it, and it is nice and quiet
  
• I don’t have to dress up!

Loneliness
But working from home is not only a bed of roses. The most obvious drawback is perhaps that you feel lonely when you don't meet with your work mates in person. That can be solved, though, if you work only part of the hours from home, maybe two or three days a week.

Practical difficulties
I think it can be harder to solve practical issues like safety measures, security and equipment. If you work from home on a regular basis, you cannot sit at the kitchen table or in a sofa. You need a good space for a workstation with the necessary communication and sharing tools. The place must be efficient, comfortable and secure, and you need backup for internet and maybe also for electricity.

All that costs money, and who pays? In my case it was easy, since I am one of three company owners, but with a big group of employees spread out in their homes you get a more complicated situation. The more security and special equipment an employee needs, the more difficult it will be to find a solution for working from home.

Future way of working?
I think the Microsoft initiative in Sweden is good. It can give people and organizations a kick to start discussing the matter of working from home more seriously than before. If all parties make an effort, I am sure the problems can be solved for more people than today. Many wish to work from home for at least some days a week, and we will probably see more of that in the future. So I wish Microsoft Sweden good luck with the “Work from home day”. I will certainly work from my home that day - and all other days also!

Auto Upgrades Or Not? Microsoft IE Decision And Apple Blunder Inspires Discussion In The kalmstrom.com Team

Users who stick to old versions are not popular among developers, who struggle to create new and better versions and of course want people to take advantage of what they have achieved. At the same time I can understand users who hesitate to upgrade. You know what you have, right? And as long as it works …

Microsoft introduces automatic upgrades for Internet Explorer
Because of this conflict between a company’s urge to spread the latest versions and some users’ sluggishness when it comes to upgrading, it was with great interest that we read Microsoft’s announcement last week. The giant has done what the kalmstrom.com team has discussed many times but not yet applied ‒ introduced an auto-update system, originally designed for security patches. Now Microsoft has decided to utilize that system to “force” users to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer compatible with the operating system.

Apple locks users out of App Store
Another, and more harsh way to make users upgrade is to simple lock them out. That is what Apple has done with users of iOS 3.1.3. Since the update of 16 December these users have not been able to update existing apps, download new ones, rate apps, or view screenshots in App store. In this case I beleive it is unintentional from Apples side, though.

Auto-upgrade for the kalmstrom.com applications?
Other browsers, like Firefox and Google Chrome, already have the auto-upgrading, so Microsoft’s decision is not revolutionary news in any way. However, that and Apple's blunder once again brought up the discussion in the kalmstrom.com team. Should we introduce automatic upgrades for our Outlook add-ons? Members of kalmstrom.com Community have free upgrades, and most of them upgrade quickly when a new version is released. Some wait until there is a problem, though, and we would like to find a way to help them avoid the irritation and disturbance that comes with all software errors.

Companies turn off automatic upgrades?
Microsoft’s automatic upgrade is turned on by default in new PCs, but in many companies they turn it off since they prefer to have more control over the upgrade process. This possibility is of course also open with the Internet Explorer upgrade on Windows machines. However, if kalmstrom.com Business Solutions would spend time on introducing auto-upgrades maybe it would still not be that much used??

Easy upgrades
The result of our discussion was this time the same as before ‒ for now we will not introduce auto upgrades but concentrate on making the upgrades of our products as easy as possible. We know we have already come a long way in that respect. “It was the smoothest upgrade I ever experienced from any software. We already supply MSI installers for Community Members with many client users, and the kalsmtrom.com developers always look for ways to enhance the upgrade experience for the users. Microsoft’s Office Marketplace is an important meeting place, where selected software vendors may present their products to IT responsibles and others who are looking for suitable programs for their organizations. For several years already, around 20 % of all visitors to the kalmstrom.com website have found their way to us through the Office Marketplaces of different countries, so it is really important for kalmstrom.com Business Solutions to have good representation there.

Strict requirements
To be allowed to present the kalmstrom.com applications on Office Marketplace we must fulfill certain rather strict requirements. When these are reached we have to apply for each product at each country’s Office Marketplace. Earlier we had to renew the applications for each product and country every year. Update Of kalmstrom.com Resource Booking Outlook Add-on

I am happy to announce that kalmstrom.com Business Solutions has released a new version of Calendar Browser, the popular resource booking application for Outlook. To book resources with Calendar Browser is meant to be as easy as creating an appointment in the Outlook calendar, and for most users it is. However, two organizations had problems with Calendar Browser and could not use the add-on as they wanted. The kalmstrom.com team could solve the issues, and now we give the new version to all.

One Community Member wanted to use Calendar Browser on machines with multiple profiles installed on each PC, but that created difficulties in loading the calendars. With today’s version they can use Calendar Browser without problems.

The other Member had a lot of calendars full of recurring appointments, and that made the loading of the Overview very slow. We made the loading faster by making Calendar Browser load appointments from only a certain time to the Overview. By default the period is one month ahead, but each user can set the date range needed.

With today's update of Calendar Browser we have also taken another step to get rid of the dependency on Office Web Components, as they are no longer needed for the Example data. Evaluators with later Outlook versions might not have them installed since Microsoft has chosen to not install them automatically. Now these evaluators can create Example data without having to install OWC first. The integrated statistics tool still needs OWC, but we are working on that last part also.

kalmstrom.com Comments On Windows 8

Last week Microsoft released a pre-beta, developer preview version of Windows 8, their new combined desktop, laptop and tablet operating system. Since then the kalmstrom.com team has been testing it, and I want to share some of our first thoughts and impressions with you. I will surely have reason to come back to Windows 8 many times.

Windows 8 is like a new dish ‒ some will be impressed by it and some not. Users who expected just an update of Windows 7 will be very surprised, and in the beginning maybe also frustrated by everything new. I hope they will come over it soon, because overall this is an intriguing change. Or as one of the kalmstrom.com technicians expressed it: "If you don't like Windows 8, then you don't like tech."

What first strikes you when you open Windows 8 is the totally new interface. Microsoft has hidden the traditional windows and instead given us a tile interface like in their mobile phones. The Start bar, which has been there in all earlier Windows versions, is removed and replaced with icons of each installed application. This tile layout is called "Metro", and it is optimized for touch as well as mouse and keyboard.

The Metro interface is meant to make it easy to have several applications open at the same time, not only on a desktop but also in a smart phone. Swiping from the left switches to the next app, but you can also swipe and drag to put several apps on a screen side by side, in the size that you want them. If you need to have many applications open it might be difficult to find them with this system, as you cannot scroll down the Start bar as before. However, since you can move application tiles in the interface and place them where you want them, you can create groups that will make it easier to find applications.

We all like the Windows Explorer in version 8. It has a ribbon interface, like Office 2010, where most of the common tasks are at your fingertips. It also has a backstage view with many useful options.

Now the team is looking forward to testing Windows 8 further once new computers with really good touch-screens come on the market. Microsoft and their hardware partners have been lagging behind Apple for quite a while, but we don´t believe that trend is going to keep. It will be very interesting to see what Microsoft will do together with Nokia, Samsung, Acer, Intel, Dell, Sony and others.

The next 9-12 months should see some exciting development both on the mobile and the PC markets, and the kalmstrom.com team members are glad to be part of it!

kalmstrom.com Uses, Resells And Develops For Office 365

The kalmstrom.com team is geographically distributed, so our intranet is a vital place for sharing and cooperation. It simply must work, and therefore only the best is good enough. We begun using SharePoint very early, and as our CEO Peter is a Microsoft certified SharePoint specialist he has been able to configure the site to make the most of it.

When Office 365 was introduced Peter saw the advantages of this cloud based service, which also has SharePoint 2010. A subscription was necessary anyway, because we need to test our products with Office 365, but Peter decided that we should use Office 365 for our internal purposes too.

We manage our support e-mails with our own product HelpDesk OSP, and today we have it running all the time on a server, automatically converting e-mails from our OWA on Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite into tickets on our SharePoint site in Office 365. We will however soon start testing our new HelpDesk OSP Azure. It will run on Windows Azure and convert e-mails received in our Office 365 Outlook into list items on our Office 365 SharePoint site.

As you understand the kalmstrom.com team has a deep understanding of Microsoft's cloud-based platforms. It was a logical step to apply for authorization to resell Microsoft Online Services. We were granted this right in July, and we have already sold Office 365 to one company after advising them on what subscription and configuration would suit their needs. kalmstrom.com Business Solutions is now an authorized Microsoft Business Solutions Reseller with the right to receive fees for selling Microsoft Online Services. Don't worry, we will continue developing and selling our own products. However, as a complement we can now give better advice and service to Community Members who wish to transfer to MS Online services like Office 365 or Windows Azure. In the future, when our products become more cloud based, kalmstrom.com will also offer a hosting service.

To gain the authorization we had to show that we understand Microsoft's cloud based services and are able to judge what platforms and configurations that would suit each Member best. This deep knowledge of the online Services is of course necessary for the kalmstrom.com team. We aim to always learn the latest technologies to take advantage of the benefits they can bring to our products, so when Microsoft started launching online services kalmstrom.com were close on their heels. The certification above is only one of the proofs on our ambition.

kalmstrom.com Goes Cloudy

As you might have understood from previous posts in this blog, we are very excited about cloud-based services in general and  Microsoft´s offerings in that area in particular.

We just released a new version of  PF HelpDesk, the kalmstrom.com issue tracking tool for Outlook, and it has support for the cloud-based SQL Azure database. This is not because many have been asking for it yet, but because we felt the urge to learn the new technology. We attempt to stay ahead of the curve and understand what our customers want before they even request it!

Now Community Members and Evaluators are asking if our applications work with Office 365 every day. The answer is that HelpDesk OSP and TimeCard already supports Office 365, and we will very soon update PF HelpDesk and Calendar Browser to support it too. However, they still work on the client-installed Microsoft Office applications we all know and love - not directly from a cloud-based service. That is where we are heading, though. We will of course continue to use and support client-based technologies, but we will expand into cloud-based services also.

One experiment-project we just concluded was a synchronization-engine between the cloud-based Office 365 and the likewise cloud-based ERP-system Fortnox. We used the Exchange Web Services and Fortnox´s API to enable synchronization between the ERP system and an Outlook Contacts list in Office 365. This was exactly what the Swedish building company Melander Bygg AB needed.

We will continue to build upon this experience to enable a variant of our other issue tracking product, HelpDesk OSP, to run entirely in the cloud, converting e-mails received in Office 365 to tickets in a SharePoint ticket list. We will of course retain the control of how the e-mails are converted, support for custom fields  in SharePoint and more. I will come back with more info about this product later on.

HelpDesk OSP Already Supports Office 365, Microsoft's New Small Business Platform

As the kalmstrom.com products are built on Microsoft's we continuously have to update them to adapt to and take advantage of new technology. Not this time, though. When Microsoft now announces changes in their online SharePoint platform for small businesses, we are happy to say that our application already works with the new product.

The kalmstrom.com incident management tool, HelpDesk OSP, supports both SharePoint and Office Live Small Business, even if nearly all Community Members prefer to use it for publishing from Outlook to SharePoint. Now Microsoft has announced that they will close down Office Live Small Business, probably from November 2011. Instead they offer the cloud-based Office 365, now available in a Beta version. As HelpDesk OSP works with all SharePoint sites, no matter if they are hosted online or in-house, it already supports Office 365.

The reason why Microsoft will remove Office Live Small Business is that they wish to give small companies a more comprehensive, professional-grade set of productivity tools. In Office 365 Microsoft brings together online versions of several communications and collaboration tools, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lync Online and Office Web Apps. Just like kalmstrom.com Business Solutions, Microsoft has chosen to use a subscription model for their new product.

Community Members can use HelpDesk OSP with Office 365 even today, and very few use Office Live anyway, so we have now removed all references to Office Live from the kalmstrom.com website. From the next version of HelpDesk OSP it will not be possible to connect to Office Live anymore. We will rewrite the manual before the next version of HelpDesk OSP is released, but for now we have chosen to keep the Office Live parts there and just explain that it will be taken out.

We are happy with Microsoft's decision, even if it means some extra work for us to remove the Office Live alternative from our tool. Now Members will get a better alternative than Office Live, and it will be easier to configure HelpDesk OSP when no choice between two platforms has to be made. The continued development and testing of the application will be quicker when we don't have to take Office Live into consideration, and the documentation will also be simpler. Everything points to a great future for both SharePoint and HelpDesk OSP!

Microsoft + Skype = Great Opportunities For kalmstrom.com

After months of speculations about who would buy or partner with Skype, we today have heard the outcome: Microsoft will acquire Skype for 8,5 billion dollars. The affair will bring many benefits to both consumers and enterprises, and it will give kalmstrom.com exciting new opportunities. Our CEO, Peter, has developed add-ons for Microsoft products for twenty years and earned 15 Microsoft certifications. He also has deep knowledge about Skype, as it was only six months ago that he left a position as Product Manager for Skype Toolbars.

When Peter begun working for Skype in 2005 it was still owned by the two creators, and they had recently bought Peter's add-on Outlook Skype. Under Peter's more than five years in the company it grew to be one of the really big, and the Skype product was much improved. That phone numbers on web pages turn into clickable buttons is just what you expect today, but it was only a few years back that Peter initiated the development of this Skype feature.

It seems that Skype will be a separate business division inside Microsoft, called Microsoft Skype. Two giants have joined forces, and it will be very interesting to see what the deal will bring in the future. I am sure I will have reason to come back to it several times ‒ always with the kalmstrom.com angle, of course!

Microsoft Versus Apple In OS Sales

Yesterday kalmstrom.com Lead Developer Jayant drew my attention to an interesting chart from SAI Chart Of The Day. It shows sales for Windows 7 and iOS, and you can see it here to the left.

We have heard a lot about Apples fantastic success with iPhone and iPad, but fact is that Microsoft has had an even bigger success with Windows 7. Microsoft has sold around 350 million licenses of Windows 7 since it was launched, while Apple during the same time "only" sold around 150 million iOS units.

Of course both Win 7 and iOS are strong operating systems that dominate the market, and kalmstrom.com Business Solutions wants to build on both. We have developed add-ons for Microsoft products for more than ten years, and in October 2009 I could write this in a blog post: "Congratulations to Microsoft who released their new operating system Windows 7 this week! All our kalmstrom.com products are of course compatible with both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version, and also with the server counterpart Windows Server 2008 R2."

iOS, on the other hand, is a new system to kalmstrom.com. We published the first app, iNameDays, early this year, and we will soon release the second one. ShareTask will make it easy for SharePoint users to manage their list items directly in iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Nokia Fires 4000 But Microsoft Partnership Gives Hope For Better Times

As Swedes we have followed the rise of the Finnish communications corporation Nokia. The company has existed in our neighboring country since 1865, but it was not until the 1980s it became well know to all of us. That was the time for the first mobile telephones, and Nokia was a fierce competitor to Swedish Ericsson. Eventually Ericsson grew strong on providing telecommunication and data communication systems while Nokia developed into the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones.

During the last year Apple and their iPhone has taken a considerable part of the mobile market, and today we heard that 4000 employees have been dismissed from Nokia because of that. Further 3000 will go to another employer when Nokia leaves its operating system Symbian.

We feel sorry for the people who loose their jobs, but we don't think the downgoing trend will continue. In February Microsoft and Nokia announced their partnership, and now Nokia really can take up the fight with Apple. Nokia will use the Microsoft operating system Windows Phone as platform for advanced smart phones, and I am sure this competition will be good for the whole market. Both parties will try to exceed each other, and hopefully we will all benefit from their rivalry.

The kalmstrom.com website is continuously improved, and now we have two new pages and a new homepage for the English section. On the homepage we tell about the most important part of the business: our standard products built on Microsoft Office, Exchange and SharePoint. The new pages instead describe the company's two other "legs".

kalmstrom.com Business Solutions was born when Peter worked as a consultant and created custom solutions for his clients. When others wanted something similar he begun selling standard products also. This was more than ten years ago, and the custom solutions have been with us all the time. The third leg is new ‒ because the possibility is new! kalmstrom.com has begun developing apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, and it will be interesting to see where they will take us. kalmstrom.com CEO Gets 12th MS Certification And Second For SharePoint

Today the kalmstrom.com team congratulates Peter, CEO of the company, who has passed his 12th Microsoft Certification and second SharePoint 2010 exam: Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Configuring. This exam validates that he has the configuration skills needed to administer a SharePoint 2010 installation.



Of course we already knew that Peter has those skills. He has been administrating our intranet for several years, and he also gives advanced lectures and courses for SharePoint administrators. SharePoint is a platform for the future. We use both our SharePoint intranet and our issue tracking application HelpDesk OSP extensively. This helps us handle the contacts with Community Members and evaluators in an efficient way, and we can also easily share information within our geographically spread team. HelpDesk OSP is not only used for support cases but also otherwise when we wish to publish from Outlook to SharePoint. For example, when we were looking for new employees this past autumn we let the Outlook add-on automatically direct applications to a special list, where we could easily review them.
